Art and Fun

Announcing: Once in a lifetime opportunity to be a judge at the finals to pick the next Washington Redskins cheerleaders this Sunday. Stay tuned for a contest in Thursday's issue. The winner will help choose the First Ladies of Football!

What do you get when you combine art and martinis? The answer was at the Corcoran Gallery of Art for the 1869 Society’s Artini soiree.

Irvine Contemporary’s Lauren Gentile, the Corporate Executive Board’s Laura Merola, the Coalition for Government Procurement’s Barbara Merola, the State Department’s Holly Rich, and Bisnow alum, now with Washington Life, Karin Tanabe on Saturday night.

Realtor Jim Rayborn and attorney Taryn Fielder were among those who tried the cocktails from 12 local mixologists vying for the top prize: most artistic martini inspired by the work of a student at the Corcoran College of Art.

During March, the 1869 Society hosted Artini nights at each of the nominated restaurants so people could try all the martinis before voting. Tough assignment! The host committee above raised over $33,000 for the Corcoran’s college's scholarships.

Taste of the Nation!

No Kid Goes Hungry was the theme of Taste of the Nation benefitting Share Our Strength. Over 1000 Washingtonians gathered at the Mellon Auditorium to raise money to fight hunger among America’s youth.  We snapped this last night of Taste of the Nation Director Vered Uziel and Chair Vidalia’s Chef RJ Cooper.

Chef Bart from Café Belga, Laura Clapsaddle and her husband, CTGi CEO Barry Clapsaddle, and Franklin Covey’s Julienne Stathis sampled treats from the area’s top restaurants.

Cooking enough food to feed all the attendees didn’t stop Oprah’s favorite chef, Chef Art Smith of Art & Soul from mingling with guests, including Tetra Tech’s Jacqueline Boltz, Prager Law’s Nancy Prager and Taste of the Nation volunteer Mary Tang.

PX’s JasonAaron Smith with 2008 James Beard nominee, and PX Mixologist Todd Thrasher, who holds his crowd-pleasing signature cocktail, Holly Hocktail.

Mortons!

Also last night, we joined wine aficionados at Morton’s Steakhouse for a seminar on French wines and food pairings, including Creative Enterprises’ Janet Donovan, CIT Partners’ Beth Solomon, and CNN’s Edie Emery.

VDS Associates’ Jean Jacques van der Slikke, here with Crawford CFO’s Carole Crawford, hosts wine classes.

Fleishman-Hillard’s crew had a strong showing: Mary LoJacono, Heather Rosenker and Christine Salembier learned that it’s always “pinky down” when drinking wine.

Makeda Saggau-Sackey contributed to today’s issue.
